Total Drek

Or, the thoughts of several frustrated intellectuals on Sociology, Gaming, Science, Politics, Science Fiction, Religion, and whatever the hell else strikes their fancy. There is absolutely no reason why you should read this blog. None. Seriously. Go hit your back button. It's up in the upper left-hand corner of your browser... it says "Back." Don't say we didn't warn you.

Choose your own Total Drek!

No, I'm not back yet. Stop asking. I am, however, curious about something. And I need a show of hands, here, so use the comments feature as it is meant to be used. I have recently come into posession of a used copy of Left Behind, the first in a serious of novels fictionalizing the (arguably itself fictional) biblical account of the Earth's final years. Given this, I want to know the following:

Would anyone be interested in one or more posts detailing my reactions to said book? Perhaps a chapter-by-chapter blog-reaction in my usual style?

Yes, please! I read that book for the hell of it some time ago. The writing's actually not the world's worst, but the smugness level is truly impressive. I would love to read your responses.

Yes. That sounds like it could be fun.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to be the person you would blame for never having finished your dissertation.

Yes, count me in, too!

And an additional tidbit - that series was also made into a stunningly horrible video game. I know this because I have a very religious in-law who purchased the game for my children.

Uh, can I vote "no" just out of sympathy for our host?

The pilot not being transported because he lusts after the stewardess was bad enough, but her getting transported later in the first chapter after she (1) gives him a blow job that levitates him twelve inches off the bed and then (2) puts a tray of six-inch spikes under him so that when she stops he falls and gets impaled and is used as representative of the better life to come for the rest of the book was just too over the top.

That would be sweet. But don't spoil the ending.

OMG - I call that series "Christian porn" and fail to understand how any decent Christian could stomach it.

Meh. I've had enough time in that community to not be interested. So let me annoy you with a completely different request:

I’m trying to contact some professional sociologists for their opinion on: If I could study under anyone currently teaching, who would it be?

eg
Anthony Giddens at Cambridge?
Sarah Smith at Melbourne?

I’m hoping some of the names will not be teaching in the USA.

Happy for you to email or blog a reply. jon.helix at g mail dotcom
