Who says Hollywood never makes anything better?

For those who are unfamiliar with Dragonball Z- count yourselves as lucky. It is a painfully horrible cartoon from our friends in Japan. If you're curious, though, this is from the original cartoon:

It's not that I think the movie will be good. It's just that if the cartoon is a raging shit-sandwich, the movie is a raging shit-sandwich with onion rings on the side. Mmmmmm.

As a side note: I watched Dragonball Z for a while because a roommate of mine (NOT the FHR) was really into it. My strongest recollection- other than of pain- was of one character claiming he would train at "100 times gravity" in order to be a super badass. I'm fairly sure that hydrogen is a metal under that kind of pressure, so I was fairly amused. Muscles don't work too good when they've been rammed into a thin paste on the deck.

100 times earth's gravity for metallic hydrogen? Not quite... More like 2.5 million atmospheres, and even that did not confirm metallization.

Still, the guy would die under 100x gravity.

Sea-monkeys have been confirmed to be able to hatch and survive just fine at 86x gravity... Some scientist put them in a centrifuge to test it.

Yeah, I think my original thought was based on earlier, and limits for the formation of metallic hydrogen. That said, keep in mind that pressure and gravity are not the same. Gravity is an acceleration but pressure is dependent on both the size of acceleration (i.e. gravity) and on the column of material above the object under pressure. This gets more complex in large planetary bodies where there may be a noticeable increase in the strength of gravity as one moves deeper into the atmosphere as a function of the inverse square law.

I say this just because it's not straightforward to convert from gravities to atmospheres.

True, but since you didn't make that distinction earlier, I assumed 1G = atmospheric pressure at sea level (14.7 psi). Thus, 100x would be 1470 psi, falling well short of the millions required to metallicize hydrogen.

Though they figure the core of a planet like Jupiter has a metallic hydrogen core for the reason you gave, there's a very tall column of gasses pressing down upon it... And the gravitational forces are stronger as well.

That's why Jupiter has such a strong magnetosphere. The conductive properties of metallic hydrogen and the rather quick rotation of the planet generate quite a magnetic field.

You are, indeed, correct.

Honestly, though, what I find most amusing about the present situation is that Dragonball has more or less led into a discussion of metallic hydrogen and the difference between pressure/gravity/etc. Good times.
